Dashboard Trim

    Tips

    • Spend a lot of time prepping the surface perfectly, especially if you are installing Alcantara. Any imperfections in the fiberglass will show in the material. Fill in scratches and sand down any bumps.
    • Do not follow Ultima's instructions! There are many ways to install trim, but some methods are better than others. I tried Ultima's method and it was very difficult and turned out terrible. I then spent 5 hrs removing the trim and glue and $800 on new trim, and reinstalled it a better way.
    • Contact glue is a pain to work with. After speaking with other builders and professional upholstery installers, I purchased 3M Headliner & Fabric Adhesive. It sprays on very easy & consistent and gives you a nice amount of time to work with.
    • Here's what I did. It was very easy and turned out perfect.
      1. Stitch line: spray adhesive on back side of colored stitching line only. Spray on fiberglass edge (where stitching will be placed). Apply fabric to dash. Work with it until the stitch line is perfect.
      2. Top of Dash: spray adhesive on back side of fabric top area and top of dash. Apply fabric to top of dash. I used plastic bondo spreaders to smooth it out.
      3. Flat area of dash (steering wheels & gauges area): spray adhesive on back side of fabric and dash flat area. Apply fabric to front flat area of dash. Smooth out moving down only. Do no push excess fabric outward to corners otherwise you'll have way too much to smooth out later.
      4. Curved ends: spray adhesive on back side of fabric corner and on dash corner. Apply fabric to dash and smooth out. This requires a little finesse. The vents can be pushed in to help remove excess fabric.

    Carpets

    Tips

    • This was a very easy task. I used the Ultima contact glue.
    • I carpeted the walls for a more finished look. Menard's sells thin black carpeting (for boats/RVs) by the foot. It matched perfectly and was super easy to work with.
    • A friend and fellow RS builder showed me a great way to create the holes for the seat bolts and washers. Get a 1" metal coupling, heat it up until it's glowing a little and push it through to the floor. It easily goes through the carpet, padding and rubber butyl. It also melts the fabric so it won't fray. Genius!

    Tips

    • No instructions exist for the part. The factory says little to no trimming is required, but both myself and another builder had to take 3/4" to 1" off the bottom for it to fit.
    • We both also had to open the emergency brake slot more at the top. I used a Dremel to widen the slot at the top a couple millimeters on each side. Yes, we had to remove carbon fiber material otherwise the emergency brake would not go all the way up.

    Seat Belts

    Tips

    • The seat and harness floor holes should be drilled at the same time. The harness holes are located behind the back seat holes and inside a bit more.
    • Before installing the crotch straps, check if the buckle will fit through the seat hole. My Willans buckle would not, therefore I had to install the seat first, then route the crotch straps down through the seat hole, and finally install the crotch strap bolts.

    • This was an easy step of the build.
